How to Create a Floating Candle with Sand Wax

Floating candles add a dreamy, magical vibe to any space, and with Sunday Culture sand wax, it’s easier than ever to create one yourself! Whether you want to keep it simple with just water or add flowers and decorations, here’s how to do it.

What You’ll Need:

  • A vessel (glass bowls, vases, or any waterproof container)
  • Water
  • Sand wax (we recommend pouring 7-8cm for the best burn time)
  • Wicks
  • Decorations (optional: flowers, pebbles, shells, etc.)
  • Glue or small stones (if using decorations that shouldn’t float)

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Prepare Your Vessel
Choose a vessel that suits your aesthetic. If you’re using decorations like flowers, shells, or beads, arrange them at the bottom. If they tend to float, secure them with glue or weigh them down with pebbles.
  2. Add Water
Pour water into the vessel, leaving enough space for the sand wax on top. If your vessel is deep, aim to have at least 7-8cm of sand wax so your candle burns longer. For shallow vessels, you can pour less wax—just note that less dry wax means a shorter burn time.
  3. Pour the Sand Wax
Slowly pour the sand wax on top of the water. It will float, creating a dry layer that acts as the candle surface. The bottom half will absorb some moisture, but that’s okay! The top layer stays dry and will burn as a normal candle.
  4. Place Your Wick
Insert a wick into the dry sand wax. Make sure it’s standing upright. If it touches the water, simply trim it so it stays dry and burns properly.
  5. Light and Enjoy!
Once your floating candle is set up, light the wick and enjoy the soft glow. It’s perfect for a dinner setting, wedding centrepieces, or just adding a cozy touch to your space.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • If you use real flowers, the water will get murky after a few days, so swap it out as needed.
  • If it’s just water and sand wax, it can last about a week before refreshing.
  • When you’re done, scoop out the sand wax and let it dry on a paper towel. Once dry, it’s ready to be reused for your next floating candle creation!

Give it a go and create your own stunning floating candle moment! ✨
