FAQ

General candle use

What type of vessel can I use?

We recommend fire-safe containers, but you can get creative with other options too—just make sure they're spacious enough. The key is to keep the melt pool away from the edges and ensure your vessel stays cool while burning. Aim for at least 10 cm in width at the narrowest point, but always test it out to make sure it stays chill when lit.

For the best burn, keep at least 5 cm of sand wax around each wick (one wick per 10 cm wide container!) and leave at least 2.5 cm between the bottom of the wick and the base of your vessel.

How long does the wax last?

The longitivity of our sand wax depends on how you use it. Whether you’re relighting the same wick or switching it up, using one wick or multiple, and how long you let it burn before refreshing—all these choices will impact how long your candle lasts.

On the bright side, our sand wax burns slower than traditional candles, giving you up to 40 hours burn time for our 220g Candle and a massive 130 hours burn time for our 650g Refill

How strong is the scent?

Our scents have a soft yet noticeable presence—enough to fill your space with a beautiful aroma, but never overpowering. Even when you're using refills to create a large centerpiece or lighting up multiple candles, the scent stays balanced and easy on the senses, giving you all the ambiance without being too much.

If you are looking for a stronger scent, we recommend using our refills to create a large candle with multiple wicks, or fill multiple candles.

What do I do with the wax and wick once the candle is blown out?

You have so many options!

  1. You can relight the same wick multiple times and burn it as long as it lasts.
  2. You can also cut the wick and re-use the part that hasn't been used yet, or
  3. You can flip the wick to bury the melt pool for zero waste while still making your candle look brand new.

Totally up to you! Keep in mind cutting the wick will shorten the burn time.

Can the sand wax float?

It sure does! We recommend pouring at least a 2" height of sand wax on top of the water and making sure the bottom of the wick is not touching the water.

You can even add decorations to the water. To do this, add any decorations you'd like into a clear vessel, fill it with water until the object is submerged, and then pour our sand wax on top.

Can I reuse the sand wax after using it as a floating candle?

Yes! Just scoop the wax out with a spoon or catch them in a fine-meshed strainer, then allow them to air dry on paper towels before reusing. The more you spread them out, the faster they will dry.

Why has my sand wax started to go yellow?

This is a common issue that occurs when your candle has been kept in direct sunlight. That's okay, give your sand wax a mix or shake it around and it should be looking pearly white again. In the future, we recommend you can move your candle to somewhere less exposed to prevent further yellowing.

Wicks

Do you have to use a new wick every time?

Nope, you can relight the same wick multiple times and burn it as long as it lasts. That said, we give you plenty of wicks with our products so you could refresh your candle as often as you'd like to make it look new again.

You can also cut the wick and re-use the part that hasn't been used yet, or flip the wick to bury the melt pool for zero waste while still making your candle look brand new.

My wick extinguishes quickly, what am I doing wrong?

The most common reason why the wick is burning too quickly is if the wick tip is left too far out of the sand wax. When inserting the wick, aim to have only about a quarter-inch tip sticking out, just enough to light it. Leaving the wick out further will shorten the burn time. If your vessel is too shallow you can trim the wick in half and now you have two wicks!

Safety

Are Sunday Culture candles safe?

Our sand wax is made from 100% pure plant-based wax, so they burn clean with almost no smoke or soot.

And here’s the cool part, if the candle gets knocked over, the sand wax self extinguishes the flame so no risk of accidental fire. If you forget and leave it burning, the wick eventually takes a dip and snuffs itself out. Safety and style all in one!

However, we always recommend to never leave a candle burning unattended.

Are Sunday Culture candles pet friendly?

Yes, our sand wax is plant-based, clean-burning, and pet-friendly. We still recommend keeping them out of reach of pets since they’re technically not edible and burning with real fire, but you'll be glad to know our wax is non-toxic and not expected to be harmful if a small amount is ingested.

You can also take some comfort in knowing that sand wax self-extinguishes if accidentally spilled as the wax snuffs the flame.

What are the ingredients?

Our sand wax is plant-based, vegan, and burn cleanly with minimal smoke or soot. It is derived from certified sustainably sourced palm oil, we have a RSPO certicate to prove. Our wax does not contain paraffin, soy or any known allergens.

We use both natural and synthetic fragrances in our scented products. Our scents are free of phthalates and parabens.
